God Is A God Of Inconvenience
Submitted by Clay Sikes

One night in early January I was unable to sleep; finally falling asleep around 4:00am and getting up at 6:00am. Earlier in the week I had planned to travel to Macon the next day, a two and a half hour journey from Hinesville (where I live) to see Arthur Burt minister before returning to his Wales homeland. I had decided that my tired body would be inconvenienced in making this five hour round trip, and reasoned, "After all, I have much to do at work on the following day."

I called Greg Viola, who was traveling with Arthur and coordinating appointments, to let him know that I would not be coming: God, however, had another plan. As I dialed the numbers to Greg's cell phone I felt compelled to go to Macon, never mind my fatigue or impending workload. I yielded to the Spirit of God and instead of telling Greg I was not coming, almost to my surprise, I told him I was coming.

Once in Macon, Jimmy Brewer (a fellow church member) and I met Arthur at his hotel prior to service at Highpoint Church. As we entered the room, the ninety-year-old Arthur lay on his bed resting.

Almost immediately Arthur said, "Do you know that God is the God of inconvenience?" "Sir?" I replied.

"Yes!" he said, "God is the God of inconvenience. Do you understand?"

"No sir," I responded.

Again he said, "God is the God of inconvenience, because if he were the God of convenience it would require little character to follow him. Do you know the scripture 'many are called, but few are chosen?' he asked."

"Yes," I replied.

"The difference between "the many" and "the few" is that "the few" have a revelation that God is the God of inconvenience, and "the many" still cling to the idea that He is the God of convenience. If there is one thing I have learned in 75 years of ministry, it is that God will use circumstance upon circumstance to develop my character because His ultimate goal is to see Christ developed in me."

He went on to explain that Jacob wrestled with God because he had a revelation that God is the God of inconvenience. Joseph endured the dungeon because he recognized the same thing. Joseph refused to blame his brothers for his years of misfortune - "So then, it was not you who sent me here, BUT GOD" (Genesis 45:8).

I knew Arthur was speaking by the Spirit and teaching me yet another deeply profound revelation. God will separate "the few" from "the many" by their appetite for God and His will. Are we willing to be inconvenienced for His sake? What a witness this 90 year old man is to me; willing to suffer inconvenience - not withstanding his age, many miles from home, traveling several thousand miles in a short two week period.

As I pulled into my driveway at 2:00am I realized that God's grace was upon me as I dialed Greg's numbers, but now the responsibility would be mine now that I own "the truth" - God is indeed the God of inconvenience. Are we willing to be inconvenienced for His sake?
